Halong Bay is east of Hanoi. It is a beautiful bay in the ocean that is full of rock/mountain formations coming out of the water. It took about 4-5 hours to get there from Hanoi via bus.
There was a nice cave that had colored lights in it that we visited.
I kayaked around for about half an hour, which was pretty frightening actually. Everyone was taking guided paddle boats and they gave me this two person kayak, but set me in the front so it made it really difficult to steer. On top of that I caught my nail on the kayak while I was paddling and pulled it back, so it just added to my uneasiness of being out there in the ocean. It was a good experience though when it was all said and done.
